Understanding credit card and ACH/debit refunds
Refunds for purchases can be issued to clients. The time it takes for the funds to be transferred back to the client’s account depends on the payment method being refunded and when the refund was processed.
Credit card refund timing
Credit card refunds depend on the timing of the refunded transaction’s batch. Batch timing will vary depending on your merchant processor.
If the transaction and refund are part of the same batch, the funds will be returned to the client on the same day.
If the refund is processed after the transaction has batched, the funds will be returned to the client’s credit card account in 3 to 5 business days.
ACH/Debit refund timing
Debit refunds, or ACH refunds, will take 5 to 7 business days to process. This means that the funds will be returned to the client’s bank account within 5 to 7 business days of issuing a refund.
